BRDF Measurement Modelling using Wavelets for Efficient Path Tracing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Physically based rendering needs numerical models from real measurements, or analytical models from material definitions, of the Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF). However, measured BRDF data sets are too large and provide no functionalities to be practically used in Monte Carlo path tracing algorithms. In this paper, we present a wavelet based generic BRDF model suitable for both physical analysis and path tracing. The model is based on the separation of spectral and geometrical aspect of the BRDF and allows a compact and efficient representation of isotropic, anisotropic and/or spectral BRDFs. After a brief survey of BRDF and wavelet theory, we present our software architecture for generic wavelet transform and how to use it to model BRDFs. Then, modelling results are presented on real and virtual BRDF measurements. Finally, we show how to exploit the multi-resolution property of the wavelet encoding to reduce the variance by importance sampling in a path tracing algorithm.

This paper surveys Radiosity and Ray-tracing methods used in global illumination. Global illumination is based on light transport mechanism in real world. The light transport mechanism can be expressed in terms of BRDF of each element, and the most common and practical way is dividing the BRDF into specular and diffuse component. Mathematically Global illumination is a problem of solving numeri...
متن کاملSpectral BRDF modeling using wavelets
The Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is a complex function characterizing the reflection of light on a surface. It depends on five variables: four angles (lighting direction and observer direction) and the wavelength. A complete measurement campaign generates a large data set difficult to model. One way to proceed is to fit an analytical model on this data set. A numerica...
متن کاملGenerating Reeected Directions from Brdf Data
Monte-Carlo path tracing algorithms for computer graphics require that given an incident light ray at a surface an outgoing direction can be computed with a distribution given by the magnitude of the bidirectional reeectance distribution function (BRDF). For analytic reeectance functions this can be done using various techniques including inverting the function, or tabulating some representatio...
متن کاملWavelet-Based Modelling of Spectral BRDF Data
The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is an important surface property, and is commonly used to describe reflected light patterns. However, the BRDF is a complex function since it has four angular degrees of freedom and also depends on the wavelength. The direct use of BRDF data set may be inefficient for scene modelling algorithms for example. Thus, models provide compress...
متن کاملInfrared ship signature prediction using measured BRDF data and global illumination rendering
Current IR ship signature codes have some limitations in predicting ship IR signatures. They either model general BRDF while ignoring multi-reflections, or compute multi-reflections with simplified BRDF models. We propose a new Monte Carlo ray tracing method incorporating measured BRDF data, which can calculate multi-reflections with general BRDF data. Much works have been done in computer grap...
